HOW DO I CLIP MY BUNNY'S NAILS?

Keep your furry one's leg still and hold the feet firmly with one hand. If your bunny does not like being carried or handled, get a helper to hold the bunny while you clip or vice versa. If you are doing this alone, holding the bunny in a trance position (not more than ten minutes per session) might make it easier to clip and also groom your bunny's underbelly.

Tip: If your bunny puts up a fight whenever you try to clip its nails, try wrapping it with a towel (like a baby), to protect yourself from his/her scratches and kicks! Bunny will also feel safer wrapped in the towel.

Part the fur to locate the nail. Clip the base of the nail (about 1-2cm above the nail vein - the pinkish coloured portion). On light coloured nails, it is easy to locate the vein. You've got to be careful with dark-coloured nails. Use a small torch to shine through the nail if you can't see the vein clearly. Or clip only the tip of the nail if you're unsure.

Keep an antiseptic cream within reach to be used in case of bleeding. If you have absolutely no experience in nail clipping, it is recommended that you consult your vet or an experienced bunny owner before attempting to clip your bunny's nails.

Do note that your bunny's nails need to be trimmed regularly (every 6-8 weeks). Long nails may cause discomfort to your bunnies and in serious cases, cause sore hocks in the hind paws as the rabbit puts its weight on its hinds rather than on its entire feet due to having uncomfortable long nails at the front of paws.
